Fished Port Everglades with Nate, Kevin, Joshua and David. We got off to a bit of a late start, instead reaching the fishing grounds closer to 9am It was a nice morning with just a light breeze from the South and West. About 1 to 1.5 seas with a very strong North current, but relatively fat with just enough ripple. I was able to hook a small Blackfin tuna early on a deep wreck at about 300ft. The tuna bight got challenging as the sun started to rise and the bright light and heat started to warm the waters.
With the current really really strong and ripping to the North, I was dropping 150g vertical jigs as far down as possible. This seemed to be the area the fish were most active. A fellow angler was able to catch a decent King on a ballyhoo plug, but I wasn't able to get a hookup on a King or bonita.
This larger than average sized Almaco Jack did hit deep in over 280ft close to a wreck. They're tremendous fighters even on medium heavy tackle. I used 50lb braid with a 40lb leader. Fortunately this isn't one of the toothy fish that could give you problems, not sure I would have been as lucky with a large King, since this fish did take a while to reel in. Overall the fishing wasn't bad. It was slow for bottom fishing, but there certainly was activity. as lucky with a large King, since this fish did take a while to reel in.
I normally fish with a medium heavy rod, either a spinning or conventional. I tend to favor the lightest tackle I can get away with. I have a Penn Battle, but that outfit would absolutely get crushed by a Amberjack, even the smaller ones. This spinning jig outfit I have is fairly new, it's only the second time on the water I've used it. The rod a Starrod Aerial, under 6' and a Fin-Nor Lethal 60 spinner with 50lbs braid. They're impressive reels. You get about 30lbs of drag, which is impressive for a reel under $100. You can prob still get it under $90. I doubt you'll find any reel that gets close to 30lbs of drag for this price.

Next time I'd go with much heavier jigs. perhaps closer to 250g. The hookups are much more difficult if your lure isn't vertical
