Fish #1 - Pre Fall Run

Tangled with this nice Crevalle on the surf early this morning at Surfside beach. It's early in the season, can't say for sure the Fall Run has started, but I did see some fingers cruise down the shorelines in very small numbers. There weren't many bites before the Jack attack, but I'd say there were about 5-10 in the school all about the same size including this one I hooked with a #1 pilchard pattern in chartreuse/white. Don't recall ever doing well with winds this light on the surf, this morning was just prob more luck than skill. After the initial run, this Crevalle had me in the backing in about 3 seconds. After busting a few knuckles, fumbling with the backing on my reel that got knotted up like a bowl of spahgetti, I finally got some leverage on him in the shallow end of the surfline. Next few weeks I'm expecting more hookups with Ladyfish and snook when the bait arrives, so maybe I won't need as much luck then.

This mornings conditions:

  • Light to calm winds, variable mostly westerly
  • Little to no chop, just an occasional ankle swell
  • No weedlines, made line handling a breeze for a change.
  • Showers offshore and a few north
  • 80+ degrees both air and surf temp

Tackle

  • Temple Fork #7
  • 200 grain shooting head
  • LP 3.5 reel
  • 30lb straight mono nothing fancy
  • Pilchard Fibre with big Holo Eyes.

Thanks Sonya, it's been slow down here in S.FLorida, the warm weather has kept most of the fish north of me. Hoping November will cool things down and the flyfishing in particular heats up on the surf. I normally dont' keep fish like this, most times I release them even the larger ones, but I sort of promised a neighbor I'd bring something back, next time it'll be a release and a picture, hope your fishings been better and tight lines, pauL
